The Lalesa micro-lot from Aricha, Yirgacheffe, is cultivated at an elevation of 2150 meters above sea level, with a total weight of approximately 9000 kilograms. This coffee is produced by smallholder farmers who employ false banana shade trees in their cultivation practices. While the coffee is grown using organic methods, it does not possess certification due to the high costs of verification. The fermentation process takes place in plastic barrels over a span of 9 days, followed by a drying period that lasts between 13 and 18 days. Once dried, the coffee is stored in a local warehouse until it is transported to Addis Ababa for further processing. After proper drying and storage, the coffee is sent to Moplaco in Gerji, Addis Ababa, and subsequently transported by train to Djibouti for export. The chosen processing methods are designed to enhance the rich, juicy flavours that characterise the qualities we love in this coffee.
This is our second year working with Ephtah Specialty Coffee, a company committed to establishing sustainable and cooperative supply chains that benefit customers, farmers, and their communities. The organisation places a strong emphasis on enhancing the role of women within the coffee sector, acknowledging their essential contribution to fostering social and economic progress in Ethiopia. Ephtah is dedicated to ensuring quality throughout the entire shipping process, prioritising the delivery of premium green coffee beans while maintaining satisfaction among all participants in the supply chain. Girma Tamiru, which translates to “Grace Miracle” in English, serves as the supplier for this particular coffee lot. The facility, equipped with 200 beds, procures coffee from the Aricha region and has been in operation for three years, collaborating with Ephtah for the last two years. The farm covers an area of 2.5 hectares and is located at an altitude of approximately 2100 meters above sea level, while Aricha itself is situated at around 2150 meters above sea level. The farm specialises in cultivating Heirloom coffee varieties and employs a minimum of six permanent staff members, with the workforce expanding to about 100 employees during the harvest period from November to January.
